Ballet Dictionary: Développé à la Seconde en Relevé
Photo by Mark Sumaylo • Text by Abigail Oliveiro
Step: This step in classical ballet means to Develop in Second Position on a Rise.
How: The supporting (standing) leg does a Relevé action which is to quickly rise up from a flat foot, going through demi-pointe (half pointe), to balancing on full pointe. At the same time, the working leg does a Développé à la Seconde which is to develop through Retiré, finishing with the leg fully extended to the side. The dancer shown is doing this with her arms in 5th Position.
Tip: Try to show the Développé action through each position whether it is a slow Développé or quick Développé to show your technique. At the end of the Développé, hold the position as much as you can before coming down so the step is done with a finished line for cleanliness.
