Ballet Dictionary: Sissonne fermée de côté
Photo by Mark Sumaylo • Text by Abigail Oliveiro
Step: Sissonne fermée de côté. The word “sissonne” describes a scissor-like movement.
How: Starting in 5th position, the dancer jumps to the side (de côté), opening the legs in a scissor-like motion and closing (fermée) back into 5th position to finish.
Tip: Starting with a grounded plié, as the dancer pushes off the floor travelling the side, consciously lift the hips up and over along with you to achieve a larger jump which gives more space to allow the legs to further split underneath.
Ballet: Swan Lake Act 1, Pas de Trois, Male Variation
Dancer: Shaira May Comeros, Ballet Manila 2
Location: La Verti Residences Roof Deck, South Tower
