In Their Own Words: Rudy De Dios on dealing with frustrations

In their own words, the artists of Ballet Manila share their thoughts and experiences on not merely surviving but flourishing in the very challenging world of dance. This series is a collection of personal anecdotes, as well as words of wisdom that can be heartwarming, funny or dramatic, but always inspiring regardless of what field one is pursuing.

You really need to prepare your mind especially with classical roles. It is so hard and very frustrating. There are set expectations, like when you watch someone who can execute a movement, you feel pressured to achieve that standard. So when you’re not able to do it, you feel embarrassed, as if you’re wanting. You will really push yourself to your limits. Because if you can only reach a certain level, it’s not okay. Because you know that someone else can do this, you force yourself to get there too.

You have to prepare your mind because you will reach that point wherein you feel frustrated when you can’t do it. Of course, sometimes you have to adjust. Whatever it is that you can achieve, you make do and try to make it work.

You need to have discipline especially with your body. You have to avoid vices especially before rehearsals. Sometimes, it’s really difficult to avoid parties, and then when you get to rehearsals, you’re tired and your body isn’t responding. That’s why there should always be discipline.
