Ballet Dictionary: Sus-sous

Photo by Mark Sumaylo Text by Abigail Oliveiro

Step: Sus-sous

How: Typically done from a fifth position, a Sus-sous is where the dancer relevés to a tight fifth position, joining their feet at the ankles on pointe or demi-pointe with fully stretched legs. This step can be executed in place, or travelling forwards or backwards.

Tip: Although fifth position is done where the ankles are crossed, try to first cross the legs from the tops of the thighs, engaging the inner thighs. Then, make sure the back of the knees are also stretched to ensure a crossed and secure fifth position.

Dancer: Xiu Ling Tan, BM2
