Ballet Manila Moments: Celebrating love and life with Kitri and Basilio
Since 1995, Ballet Manila has been creating unforgettable performances on stage. As the acclaimed storytellers on toes, they have breathed life to an amazing range of classical and contemporary fare. The Ballet Manila Archives celebrates some of those moments from the company’s first 25 years through this series.
At the very core of Ballet Manila’s classical roots is Don Quixote. This ballet’s feisty heroine is Kitri, the role that is most identified with the company’s artistic director, prima ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde. Lisa has danced this signature role with longtime dance partner and co-artistic director Osias Barroso as her playful Basilio not just in the Philippines, but also in Russia and Cuba.
Don Quixote is a staple in Ballet Manila’s repertoire. This clip from 2004 features Lisa and Shaz as Kitri and Basilio celebrating their love with a spirited dance for two. This performance was part of the company’s 8th season held at Star Theater.
