Ballet Manila Moments: A multi-cultural dance tapestry

Ballet Manila Moments: A multi-cultural dance tapestry

Since 1995, Ballet Manila has been creating unforgettable performances on stage. As the acclaimed storytellers on toes, they have breathed life to an amazing range of classical and contemporary fare. The Ballet Manila Archives celebrates some of those moments from the company’s first 25 years through this series.

No international tour of Ballet Manila is complete without the performance of Sayaw Sa Pamlang. A masterpiece by acclaimed choreographer Agnes Locsin, it successfully blends the distinctive traditional dance elements from Mindanao with classical ballet movements. The result is a rich tapestry that celebrates the multi-cultural heritage of the company.

Since its premiere, it has been performed in Russia, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Vietnam, and in most of the major cities in the Philippines. Generations of dancers have also performed this piece including all of the company’s current principal dancers.

In this clip are excerpts of Sayaw Sa Pamlang taken from performances in the Philippines (2001 and 2016) and in Malaysia (2019).
