“I think that the number one duty of the male classical dancer is to present the ballerina well. I want my ballerinas to look good.”

Osias Barroso Jr. was a born artist.

As a ballet dancer, Osias “Shaz” Barroso Jr. was a late bloomer. But learning classical dance at age 18 proved to be a turning point.

“When I dance, I am mostly influenced by the strength of the music, and this sensitivity helps me understand my character. One must understand the music, along with the role one is portraying.”

For Shaz, a danseur’s primary aim has always been clear – to present one’s partner well.

“The chemistry between a ballerina and a danseur comes from trust and this can only be achieved through rehearsals on stage.”

Choreography was a natural offshoot of Shaz’s passion for dance.

“I’m very particular with music. It’s most important. I have to be moved by it.”

To generations of ballet students and dancers, he is “Teacher Shaz.”

“Daily classes are the best preparation for dancers. That is the foundation of their technique.”

Asked what she would consider as Osias Barroso's most significant contribution to Philippine dance, Lisa readily replies and gives her most enduring partner on stage and off a heartfelt tribute: “Ballet Manila and all the dancers and shows that are in its history. Shaz is the force behind Ballet Manila. People think it's me. But he is.”
