In Their Own Words: Soloist John Ralph Balagot on performing supporting roles

In their own words, the artists of Ballet Manila share their thoughts and experiences on not merely surviving but flourishing in the very challenging world of dance. Gusto ko masama sa Giselle. Kung may Giselle, gusto ko mag-Hilarion. I think, sa sarili ko, parang puwede ako niyan. Gusto ko sa ballet parang second lang ako. Hindi ako ‘yung principal, second lead lang ako. Parang kagaya nu’ng kay Hilarion, huwag muna doon sa lead role… sa principal role. Doon tayo sa baba muna, dito sa umpisa tapos paangat nang paangat para maka-adapt ako. Galing ako diyan at alam ko ang gagawin. Parang may levels at gusto kong pagdaanan lahat. 

I want to be a part of Giselle. If there will be a Giselle (performance), I want to be Hilarion. I think, for me, I think I can do it. In ballet, I like being in the supporting role. I’m not the principal but I’m the second lead. Just like with Hilarion, I’m not ready for the lead role… the principal role. I want to rise from the bottom, here at the start and then climb higher and higher from there so I can adapt. I came from there so I would know what to do. It’s like there are levels and I want to experience everything.
