Ballet Manila Moments: Dancing a literary masterpiece
Since 1995, Ballet Manila has been creating unforgettable performances on stage. As the acclaimed storytellers on toes, they have breathed life to an amazing range of classical and contemporary fare. The Ballet Manila Archives celebrates some of those moments from the company’s first 25 years through this series.
One of the most beloved literary masterpieces, Ibong Adarna has been enchanting Filipinos since it was first penned in the 16th century. Its original title is Korido at Buhay na Pinagdaanan ng Tatlong Prinsipeng Magkakapatid na anak ni Haring Fernando at ni Reyna Valeriana sa Kahariang Berbanya (Corrido and Life Lived by the Three Princes, children of King Fernando and Queen Valeriana in the Kingdom of Berbania). It is the story of a family torn apart by betrayal but reunited by love, compassion and forgiveness. Woven into this is a mythical bird capable of healing the worst of hurts.
Ibong Adarna has transcended its literary roots to become the core material of all other art forms. It has been turned into paintings, music, stage plays, films and dance. Ballet Manila’s 2017 version choreographed by principal dancer Gerardo Francisco Jr. continues this tradition.
