Under Construction: The enchanting Odalisques of Le Corsaire

Under Construction: The enchanting Odalisques of Le Corsaire

Historically, an odalisque is a female slave of a concubine living in a sultan’s palace in Turkey during the time of the Ottoman Empire.

While they represent the same in Le Corsaire, the odalisques in the ballet possess an enchanting quality characterized by a combination of grace and beauty.

In this video clip, Ballet Manila principal dancer Shaira Comeros, soloist Rissa May Camaclang and company artist Eva Chatal are seen rehearsing the Odalisque Variations of Lisa Macuja Elizalde’s Le Corsaire. The company is set to premier this new version of the classic adventure ballet, with shows on February 24 and 25 at Aliw Theater.
