This Month in BM History: February 1995

Ballet Manila was formed in December 1994, but it celebrates its anniversary in February as it was on that month in 1995 that the group had its debut performance.

On February 17 and 18, the fledgling company led by principals Lisa Macuja and Osias Barroso and artistic director Eric V. Cruz presented Ballet Manila Dances! at the PCIBank’s Francisco Santiago Hall in Makati. The show’s repertoire consisted of classical pieces, except for Barroso’s original choreography In Quest which had its world premiere.

As Ballet Manila marks its 22nd anniversary this year, we revisit its beginnings through items culled from the Ballet Manila Archives. That first show in Makati paved the way for countless others in places big and small all over the Philippines and abroad. As the title of that launching concert proclaimed, the group has lived up to its promise for more than two decades since. Indeed, Ballet Manila Dances!
