Ballet Manila Moments: The wilis of Giselle
Since 1995, Ballet Manila has been creating unforgettable performances on stage. As the acclaimed storytellers on toes, they have breathed life to an amazing range of classical and contemporary fare. The Ballet Manila Archives celebrates some of those moments from the company’s first 25 years through this series.
The dramatic appearance and synchronized movements of the wilis — the spirits of young women who die before their wedding — make Giselle one of the most challenging ballets for the female corps. Rows and rows of beautiful women in stark white romantic tutus move in absolute unison. From the angles of the heads to the heights of the jumps, every aspect is precise and measured.
In 2019, after a devastating fire at Ballet Manila’s home theaters, the company went on to perform Giselle at the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The corps de ballet received thunderous applause for its performance — combining delicate artistry and striking precision for a captivating ballet moment.
