Ballet Dictionary: Costume

What: Costume

A dance costume is a garment worn by a dancer when performing. Depending on the type of dance, era and what the choreographer’s artistic visions are, costumes can range from dresses and suits to tutus and tights and even just leotards. Costumes are used to enhance the scene or setting of a production. They also help the dancers with the portrayal of their characters by dressing and looking the part. No matter what kind of costume it may be, it should be designed in a way to not hinder the dancer’s movements.

The costume used here is a beautiful gown fit for a Queen in a Story Ballet.
