Family is forever in ‘Ang Kapatid Ng Tatlong Marya’
The unbreakable bond of family is the focus of Ang Kapatid Ng Tatlong Marya, the second story in Ballet Manila’s upcoming season production: Tatlong Kuwento Ni Lola Basyang.
A folk healer and his wife chop down a tree laden with leaves that cure the sick, angering the serpent living in the fallen plant. As punishment, it takes their three daughters and marries them off to the kings of lions, eagles and sharks. They bear a fourth child – a son – who later embarks on a journey to find his sisters and reunite their broken family.
Ballet Manila artistic director Lisa Macuja Elizalde choreographed this touching piece laced with adventure, with inputs from her late co-artistic director Osias Barroso Jr., co-artistic associate Gerardo Francisco Jr. and Ernest Mandap. The contemporary neo-ethnic music was composed by Joey Ayala.
In this clip from the 2009 performance, Alvin Santos takes on the lead role of Pedro, with Zaira Cosico, Mylene Aggabao and Anne Kateri Gelvoria as his sisters and Eileen Lopez and Harold Salgado as his parents.
Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang — based on the stories of Severino Reyes as retold by Christine Bellen-Ang — will have performances at Aliw Theater on: May 11, Saturday, 8 p.m.; May 12, Sunday, 5 p.m.; and May 18, Saturday, 5 p.m.
