Stepping Out: Vacation vibes (Second of three parts)

Stepping Out: Vacation vibes (Second of three parts)

After wrapping up a particularly packed last-quarter calendar in 2024, Ballet Manila took a well-deserved breather. By this time, the company has already gone back to the studio for daily classes and rehearsals, with everyone with everyone eager for a coming milestone – the 30th performance season dubbed “The Pearl Year” opening in March. We caught up with some of BM’s finest to ask where they went and what they did to refresh and recharge during their recent break – and what they’re looking forward to in 2025.

JESSICA PEARL DAMES, principal dancer

 Travel destination: Siquijor.

Trip highlights: Going to the beautiful beaches in Siquijor, rope swinging in Cambugahay Falls and first time freediving with Sean (Pelegrin), Pia (Dames) and Robert (Osorio). Every time we go to the beach, I enjoyed snorkeling with a life vest. To do it without the life vest and be able to go deep in the ocean and swim with turtles and fishes is a dream come true! It was an amazing experience and I can't wait to do it again this year!

Toast to 2025: Looking forward to dancing more and going on tour again this year.

MARK SUMAYLO, principal dancer

Travel destination: We went to Melbourne Australia to visit my in-laws.

Trip highlights: Spending quality time with my in-laws and close family friends. We also visited an aged care facility; usually we perform/dance every time we visit. We also visited good friends Tiff (Janolo) and Jay (Janolo, former BM colleague and mentor). I went fishing pala. But no photos. It’s fun not to have a phone and to just enjoy the moment.

Toast to 2025: Looking forward to a healthy 2025 season. Excited for the opportunities in store for me!

RISSA MAY CAMACLANG, soloist

Travel destination: Noah (Esplana) and I went to Boracay for the company break!

Trip highlights: We had such an amazing time soaking up the sun and enjoying the beach! One of the highlights is when Noah and I went snorkeling and helmet diving. Another is the Boracay night life. The trip of course was made special because we were staying at Feliz Hotel. It is such a beautiful and serene place, we can’t wait to come back!

Toast to 2025: I’m looking forward to dancing more roles this year, more performances and tours! I am grateful that I am spending another year with Ballet Manila; this is my 12th year with the company and I’m hungry for more!
