Good triumphs over evil in ‘Ang Mahiwagang Biyulin’
Hard work, honesty and fairness are but a few of the many values beautifully woven into Ang Mahiwagang Biyulin, the third story in Ballet Manila’s Tatlong Kuwento Ni Lola Basyang.
This tale revolves around a laborer named Rodrigo who is cheated of his wages by the greedy Ahab. His kindness is rewarded with an enchanted violin that can make anyone who hears its music dance even against their will. Soon, Ahab finds himself on the receiving end of this magical instrument and getting his just desserts while Rodrigo finally receives what he is owed.
Ang Mahiwagang Biyulin was choreographed by Tony Fabella to the music of National Artist Ryan Cayabyab as arranged by Arnold Buena.
In this clip, Ballet Manila co-artistic associate and principal dancer Gerardo Francisco Jr. is Rodrigo – a role that he premiered in 2008 and continues to perform to this day. Rodrigo is seen facing off with Ahab as performed by soloist John Balagot.
Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang — based on the stories of Severino Reyes as retold by Christine Bellen-Ang — will have performances at Aliw Theater on: May 11, Saturday, 8 p.m.; May 12, Sunday, 5 p.m.; and May 18, Saturday, 5 p.m.
