La Bayadere: The hazy legacy of Solor

A temple dancer, the brave warrior and how their love ends in tragedy is often how most ballet companies describe La Bayadere in their synopsis. Set in Ancient India, the story of Nikiya and Solor is often perceived as the ultimate expression of fidelity. Nikiya stays true to her beloved but pays the ultimate price for her faithfulness. A closer look, however, reveals that the hero may not have been as willing to sacrifice for his temple dancer.

In their libretto, legendary choreographer Marius Petipa and collaborator Sergei Khudekov wrote the character of Solor as the most noble among the kingdom’s soldiers. His comrades look up to him and want to be like him. Thus, it comes as no surprise when the Rajah decides that he is worthy of his daughter Gamzatti’s hand in marriage. The elder royal even has a portrait of Solor commissioned to further show her the warrior’s attributes. Gamzatti does not need much convincing, as it turns out.

And this is where the conflict lies. Solor has promised his heart to Nikiya but keeps their relationship a secret. When he is told that he is to marry Gamzatti, he remains silent. He neither reveals his love for Nikiya, nor his disinterest in the princess.

Admittedly disobeying the Rajah carries with it the most severe of punishments. The threat of treason would have been enough to daunt any other man. But Solor is not like any other. He is the noblest of his kind. His moral compass should have demanded that he honor his oath to Nikiya. Instead, he chooses silence.

But that silence eventually breaks him when Nikiya dies. Rather than face the situation, he takes opium to ease his heartbreak. And in his dreamy haze, Nikiya comes to him to remind him of the love they once shared. Yet, even then, Solor is unable to make a decisive choice. It is the gods that intervene and offer justice for Nikiya.

When Petipa choreographed the role of Solor for the Grand Pas d’action in the final act, he did so with two danseurs in mind: Lev Ivanov and Pavel Gerdt. The former was the Solor who performed the role for first time, and the latter was a cavalier in the cast who was tasked to shadow the much older Ivanov. They would both dance with Nikiya and Gamzatti. It was Gerdt who performed Solor’s variation.

Francis Cascano was Ballet Manila’s first Filipino danseur to have performed as Solor in the full-length La Bayadere in 2004. 

When La Bayadere was staged in 1900, it was Gerdt’s moment to shine. He was finally cast in the lead role opposite Matilda Kschessinskaya’s Nikiya. Significant changes were made in his variations, suiting his more athletic style. He would go on to originate many of the important male lead roles in ballet including Prince Désiré in The Sleeping Beauty and Prince Coqueluche in The Nutcracker.

Since then, Solor became one of the most coveted roles in classical ballet. Among the most noted danseurs to perform the role were Vakhtang Chabukian, Sergei Berezhnoi, Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Laurent Hilaire, Nikolai Tsiskaridze, Ivan Vasiliev, Sergei Polunin and Kimin Kim.

For Ballet Manila, the role of Solor in the company’s full-length productions have been performed by Maxim Chaschegorov, Francis Cacaño, Niño Guevarra, Mikhail Martinyuk, Rudy De Dios, Harold Salgado, Elpidio Magat, and Alfren Salgado.

The coming 2026 production of La Bayadere will feature guest artist Kimin Kim performing as Solor oposite fellow Mariinsky Ballet principal dancer as Nikiya. A second cast will also see soloist Noah Esplana debut the role opposite principal dancer Abigail Oliveiro as Nikiya and soloist Shamira Drapete as Gamzatti
