In Their Own Words: Judith Po on the value of competitions
In their own words, the artists of Ballet Manila share their thoughts and experiences on not merely surviving but flourishing in the very challenging world of dance. This series is a collection of personal anecdotes, as well as words of wisdom that can be heartwarming, funny or dramatic, but always inspiring regardless of what field one is pursuing.
I think it’s a great training ground but a lot of challenges would come up during competition. You have to be mentally strong.
I don’t think it’s good for kids who are too young to compete without understanding that this is just for training. When you’re young, you’re very impressionable. If the student isn’t mentally strong enough, maybe wait for a few more years.
If you’re mature enough, compete! I loved it! I learned so much about myself during the months leading up to competition. You really get to push and see yourself grow. You have a lot of ups and downs but, over all, you grow.
